My family takes May the fourth seriously; it is a holiday to us just like Thanksgiving or Christmas or a birthday. Star Wars is important to us, and, as people do, we celebrate with food. On the menu this year? Yodamole and the dessert of Tatooine (homemade hummus) with Storm Trooper scoopers (scoop chips) and lightsabers (colorful carrots and peppers). Han Solo Rolos. And, my personal favorites: Wookiee Cookies- my Mom’s classic oatmeal raisin recipe.

A troop of Wookiee Cookies

I know, I know, so many people hate raisins. I’m not even going to try to convince you otherwise. If you don’t like raisins, don’t eat them. Just substitute chocolate chips and all is right with the world, okay?*

Want oatmeal raisin cookies while not celebrating Star Wars Day? It’s okay, I won’t tell. Also, there’s never a bad time to honor Wookiees. Never.

Fresh Wookiee Cookies

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp orange peel
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg (if desired)
  • pinch of salt (optional)
  • 3 cups uncooked oats
  • 1 cup raisins

The cutest half-eaten cookie you'll ever seeDestructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugars together until smooth and creamy. Add in eggs, vanilla, and orange peel and beat until thoroughly incorporated.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt. Pour into butter mixture, and mix well. Add in oats and raisins, and mix until fairly evenly distributed.
  4. Drop dough by Tablespoonful (or small ice cream scoop) onto ungreased cookie sheets, and bake for 8-10 minutes until lightly browned. Cool for one minute on cookie sheet, then cool completely on wire racks. Store tightly covered.

  • *If you’re choosing to substitute the raisins with chocolate chips (ooh or m&ms), I would leave out the cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. And maybe add in some nuts. But that’s just me. You do you. Feel the force, and all that.
